Lead pharmacist Community Mental Health Services South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust

I provide pharmaceutical professional leadership in mental health services and act as an advanced practitioner, providing expert opinion both within and outside pharmacy to ensure the safe and effective delivery of medicines management within this sector which optimises clinical outcomes and minimises adverse reactions and errors in this area. I have been a pharmacist for 21 years.

Pharmacy in NI has offered me a career that is secure, flexible and provided many opportunities enabling me to work across so many specialities. Pharmacy in NI has never ceased to amaze me with its ability to respond to changing healthcare needs in our society and ensure we are key players in a sustainable NHS. In my role for instance, I am a fully embedded member of the mental health community teams.

Pharmaceutical care for people with mental health problems is improved by providing patients education and support about mental health conditions, medications and their management. I am so excited to be part of a regional pharmacy mental health group whose aim is to raise awareness of mental health and indeed this specialty of pharmacy that is a varied and very interesting area of medicine. We also want to challenge the stigma associated with mental health given that patients with severe mental illness are likely to die, on average, 10 years earlier than the rest of the UK population. I would love my role as a pharmacy champion to be a platform to raise the profile of mental health pharmacists as well as sharing with pharmacists my experience and show what an exciting and variable role a pharmacist can have.
